This week I took a break from working on metadata to work on my presentation for the modeling and simulation institute!
As I mentioned in my last blog post, I’m going to be doing a short presentation for some of the students in the Modeling and Simulation Institute’s summer camp program, which is all Barbie themed! The program is being led by Abbie Easter, who I met when I was taking “Laser Scanning America’s Past” with Dr. Robkin. She showed us some techniques for scanning objects with our phones, which was really interesting! She also talked about some of the things she did at the MSI, including her involvement in their student programs. We actually had class in the MSI building a couple times, so I got to see a bunch of the scanners they store there along with their student learning center. (I also got to see Tape Measure the Robot Dog!)
A few months later I actually ran into Abbie at the record store (of all places, lol!) and she asked if I wanted to be part of the summer camp programs this year! Because of the type of work we’re doing with the Howard Project, she thought it would be perfect to talk about with the kids.
On Thursday I met Dr. French at CHDR so I could get some extra photos for my presentation! Dr. French had already taken and sent some pictures of Matt and I looking through all the books, which I definitely want to include. When I went in this past week, I got full and up close photos of the scanner and camera lens, some up close photos of the scrapbooks we’ve scanned, and some pictures of the computer program we use to take the scans.
This upcoming week I want to finish working on my PowerPoint and upload all of the pictures into the slideshow, as well as make some presentation notes. I still need to work out exact dates with Abbie as to when I’m presenting, but I’m hoping I can go in sometime early next week so I can get some pictures for our final semester presentation at the end of next week. Dr. French mentioned it would be a great aspect to have in our final presentation as the public history portion of this project is just as important as the actual scanning.
Between working on both of those presentations and getting back into the metadata, I have my work cut out for me this upcoming week!!
