A lot happened this week! I got the chance to present our project to the students at the modeling and simulation institute on Thursday which was a really exciting and rewarding opportunity. When I had originally spoken with Abbie, who was leading the camp, she had mentioned that the age range for the camp was late elementary to late middle school students, however when I arrived on Thursday most of the kids ended up being in the 4th-5th grade age range. I was nervous because I wasn’t sure how interested the kids would be in The Howard Project, but that day they just so happened to be learning about scanning for historical preservation, so they were definitely interested in what I was showing them! I was surprised at how many questions they were asking about the scanners and the objects we scanned. I showed them everything from the Titan scanner to the oldest scrapbook they have and they loved it. While the kids were on their lunch break, Abbie showed me a new scanner they had gotten for the kids to use later that day. It was a structured light scanner that I had never seen before! It honestly was really cute, it looked like a little robot.
I also get nervous presenting in general just because I get worried that I’ll go off topic or use terms that kids wouldn’t understand, but everyone had a great time and understood what we were doing with the school- I even had some of the adults ask me questions!
The next day we had our final internship showcase for the semester! I was nervous about that presentation as well, not only because I had so much going on towards the end of the summer and needed to make sure I had enough time to help put it all together, but also because this was my first internship showcase where I’d actually be talking. Dr. French and Dr. Lyons had invited me to watch the internship presentations from the Spring semester, so I had a bit of an idea as to how things went which was really helpful. Going first was a little daunting and it’s difficult to present virtually with multiple people, but we did it!! It was so cool hearing about everyone else’s projects, especially PRINT because I’ll be working with them this upcoming fall semester.
Between some health issues and balancing my last few days at my job, I’ve definitely had to learn how to balance life with this project, but luckily I’ve still been able to manage most of my responsibilities with UCF while still having fun with it! Next week Matt and I are going to meet back in CHDR to scan a yearbook that actually belonged to a family member of his! Howard doesn’t have this yearbook in their collection, so he’s hoping to give them these scans as well when they’re completed. I’m really excited to see it!
